North Carolina State nearly threw one away, but Scott Wood bailed them out.
Wood made a basket with two seconds to play to lift NC State to a 72-70 non-conference victory over Delaware State Wednesday.
The Wolfpack (7-4) got career highs from Richard Howell with 16 points and DeShawn Painter with 14. C.J. Leslie added 15 points for NC State, which has won three of its last four games.
Delaware State (4-6) was down by as many as 13 and trailed by 10 at the half. The Hornets worked themselves all the way back in the closing seconds.
Casey Walker hit four 3-pointers and finished with 20 points for Delaware State. He hit two free throws with 37 seconds to play to tie the game, 70-70.
Wood scored just two points in 36 minutes but they were big ones. He grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a putback to give the Wolfpack a 72-70 lead. Jay Threatt threw up a shot from midcourt at the buzzer that was off the mark.
The Wolfpack played without All-Atlantic Coast Conference forward Tracy Smith, who missed his ninth straight game with a knee injury.
