Trevor Mbakwe missed his four field goal attempts, but went 12 for 20 from the free throw line and had 16 rebounds as No. 13 Minnesota survived Cornell's upset bid 71-66 Saturday at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

Mbakwe’s 20 attempts from the line tied a team record previously held by Tony Jaros and Larry Mikan.

Minnesota (7-1), which lost its first game of the season 87-79 to Virginia on Monday, appeared lethargic in the first half, but Cornell (2-6) couldn’t hold on to its momentum and the Golden Gophers pulled away late in the game. The Big Red trailed by only one point 34-33 at halftime.

Blake Hoffarber and Ralph Sampson III scored 13 points apiece for Minnesota. Hoffarber had five rebounds and three assists, and Sampson pulled down six boards.

Chris Wroblewski and Errick Peck had 16 points apiece for Cornell.
