Maryland ended the first month of college basketball action on a winning note, topping Elon 76-57 on Friday at College Park, Md.
The Terrapins (5-2), which received votes in the latest ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches Poll, overcame serious struggles in the first half as Elon (2-3) appeared headed for a big upset. Elon jumped out to a 15-5 lead and led 34-31 at halftime.
In the second half a free throw by Maryland's Sean Mosley and two free throws by teammate Jordan Williams tied the score at 34-34 with 19:19 to play. Elon went back and forth and trailed 40-39 with 16 minutes to go, but the Terps went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes. Elon could only cut its deficit to seven points following that as Maryland went on to win.
Williams topped all scorers with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Maryland’s Adrian Bowie just missed a double-double with 14 points and eight boards, and Mosley chipped in 10 points.
Jack Isenbarger scored 23 points and had six rebounds off the bench for Elon.
