Tu Holloway scored 28 points to lead Xavier to an 86-73 victory over Iowa in the first round of the Paradise Jam on Friday in St. Thomas.
The eight-team tournament also includes Alabama, Clemson, Long Beach State, Old Dominion, Seton Hall and St. Peter’s. Xavier next will meet Seton Hall while Iowa faces Alabama. The Pirates knocked off the Crimson Tide 83-78 earlier Friday.
Holloway was 5-of-10 from the field and did most of his damage at the free throw line where he was 16-of-18. For the game, Xavier was 30-of-37 from the line.
Mark Lyons added 18 points and Jeff Robinson had 15 for the Musketeers (3-0), who are 3-0 for the second straight season.
Iowa (1-2) trailed 42-31 at the half and fell behind by 20 with just under 12 minutes to play after Xavier went on a 21-12 run in the first eight minutes of the second half.
Matt Gatens scored 15 points for the Hawkeyes, who shot 24-of-68 (35 percent) from the field.
