Virginia Tech jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead but struggled to put away Campbell in a hard-fought 70-60 opening win Friday in Blacksburg, Va.
The Hokies' All-American candidate Malcolm Delaney had a game-high 20 points, but shot just 3-of-10 from the floor. He was a perfect 11-for-11 from the line, though.
Terrell Bell had 17, and Jeff Allen had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Hokies (1-0).
Junard Hartely led Campbell (0-1) with 14 points, and Eric Griffin added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Virginia Tech takes a step up in competition Tuesday, when the Hokies travel to No. 3 Kansas State. Campbell will look to bounce back at East Carolina on Wednesday.
