Freshman guard Pe'Shon Howard hit a mid-range, fade-away jumper with five seconds to play to lift Maryland to a 75-74 win over Charleston, Wednesday in Landover, Mary.
The Terrapins (2-0) were down six with 2:24 to play, but scored the final seven points, four of which came from Howard. Maryland picked up its second win of the season despite a dreadful 5-of-18 performance from the foul line.
The Cougars (0-1) led for much of the game and answered several Maryland runs in the second half. Andrew Goudelock had a game-high 27 points, but his desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer was no good.
Jordan Williams had 26 points and 15 rebounds to lead Maryland. Howard finished with 14.
Maryland hosts Coastal Carolina Tuesday, before facing No. 4 Pittsburgh Nov. 18 in the Championship Round of the 2K Sport Challenge/Coaches vs. Cancer at Madison Square Garden. Charleston will try to bounce back at Holy Cross Saturday.
