Starling Marte beat out an infield single to drive in the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning for the New York Mets, who squandered a four-run lead before recovering to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Friday in Phoenix.

The Mets have won 11 of their first 15 games, their best record through 15 games since opening the 2018 season with a 12-3 mark. The Diamondbacks had their two-game winning streak snapped.

With automatic runner Jeff McNeil at second base to open the top of the 10th, Mark Melancon (0-2) retired James McCann and Brandon Nimmo on groundouts before getting Marte to ground to third. Marte was initially called out, but the Mets challenged and the call was overturned after replay showed Marte just beat the throw from Matt Davidson.

Seth Lugo tossed a hitless bottom of the 10th and worked around a two-out walk to earn his first save in relief of Edwin Diaz (1-0), who was credited with the victory despite giving up Daulton Varsho's game-tying solo homer with two outs in the ninth.

That completed a comeback for the Diamondbacks, who fell behind 5-1 when McCann hit a 452-foot homer -- the longest of his career -- in the seventh inning.

Pete Alonso had a pair of RBIs via a single and a groundout earlier in the game for the Mets, who also received a sacrifice fly from Francisco Lindor. Marte and Nimmo had two hits apiece.

Cooper Hummel gave the Diamondbacks a brief lead in the third inning with an RBI groundout before Varsho lofted a sacrifice fly in the seventh off Chasen Shreve in the seventh and Christian Walker hit a two-run homer off Trevor May in the eighth.

Pavin Smith had two hits for the Diamondbacks.

Mets starter David Peterson allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings. Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen gave up one run on two hits and one walk while striking out seven over five innings.
