Jason Heyward drilled a game-ending, three-run home run in the 10th inning to lift the host Chicago Cubs to a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night.

Patrick Wisdom opened the 10th with a one-hop single to center against Brad Brach (1-2), Chicago's first hit since the second inning.

The Cubs held courtesy runner Willson Contreras at third base, setting the stage for Heyward, who returned to the lineup one night after he was a late scratch due to cramping in his right hamstring.

Chicago (65-76) won for the eighth time in nine games while the Reds (74-67) fell for the third time in four games.

Cincinnati, which lost its fifth straight series by dropping two of three in Chicago, outhit the Cubs 6-4 in the series finale.

Chicago's Ian Happ opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning to extend his career-best hitting streak to nine games. Happ has homered in three straight games and in seven of his past 13 contests. As a team, Chicago has gone deep in 15 consecutive contests.

Codi Heuer improved to 7-2 with the victory with two perfect innings. He stranded the Reds' courtesy runner in the 10th by inducing a popup and getting two strikeouts.

Joey Votto slugged a game-tying solo home run against Cubs starter Alec Mills with two outs in the fourth. The blast was his 29th of the season and ninth against Cubs pitching in 2021.

The homer also was the 324th of Votto's career, tying him with Frank Robinson for second in franchise history. Johnny Bench holds the record with 389 home runs.

Jonathan India had two hits for the Reds and narrowly missed breaking the 1-all tie with two outs in the eighth inning, doubling off the top of the wall in center.

Mills dueled Reds counterpart Vladimir Gutierrez for much of the night. Mills yielded one run and four hits in six innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Gutierrez allowed one run and two hits in five innings while walking two and striking out six.

Following a Sergio Alcantara bunt single with two outs in the second, Reds pitching issued only two walks until Wisdom's hit to start the 10th.

Cincinnati claimed the season series from Chicago 11-8.
