Athletics 2, Rangers 0: Rookie Yoenis Cespedes went 3-for-3 and fell a homer shy of the cycle and Bartolo Colon shut down baseball’s most potent offense with eight strong innings as host Oakland handed Texas its first shutout loss of the season.

Colon (5-6) allowed five hits and struck out five to defeat Texas for the first time since 2007 and improve to 18-6 against the Rangers. He retired the last 11 batters he faced.

Brian Fuentes pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his fifth save in seven chances.

Texas’ Colby Lewis (4-5) fell to 1-5 in his last seven starts and had a five-game winning streak against Oakland snapped. He allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings as the Rangers lost for the fifth time in their last seven games.

Brandon Inge’s one-out single in the second inning drove in Cespedes, who led off with a double. Cespedes’ single in the fourth scored Josh Reddick, who opened the inning with a two-base hit.
