Athletics 5, Rangers 4 (10): Kila Ka’aihue's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning helped Oakland salvage a split of its two-game road series against the American League West leaders.

Jonny Gomes led off the extra frame with a base hit against Mike Adams (0-2) and advanced to third on a one-out single by pinch hitter Daric Barton. Ka’aihue then took the first pitch he saw into right field, plating Gomes with the go-ahead run.

Brian Fuentes worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the inning to save it for Ryan Cook (1-0), who worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning after an error by third baseman Josh Donaldson put the leadoff man on second base. Cook worked the eighth and ninth innings, extending his run of 19 2/3 scoreless innings to open the season.

Mitch Moreland homered twice for the Rangers, who have dropped four of six.

The Athletics took a three-run lead in the first inning against Matt Harrison. Gomes opened the scoring with an RBI double and came in to score on a two-run double by Kurt Suzuki.

Moreland made it a 3-2 game with a home run in the fourth inning. His second blast, a one-out solo shot to right, tied it in the sixth.

The Rangers added another run in that frame before Josh Reddick helped Oakland draw even with a solo homer in the seventh.

Each starting pitcher lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and three walks. Harrison gave up three runs and struck out three, while Oakland’s Brandon McCarthy allowed four runs and struck out four.

Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton entered the game in the eighth inning and went 0-for-2, snapping his 16-game hitting streak.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Replays showed that umpires missed McCarthy catching the ball on what instead turned into a go-ahead RBI fielder’s choice by Elvis Andrus in the sixth. Oakland manager Bob Melvin was ejected for arguing the call with home plate umpire Laz Diaz. ... Moreland hit two home runs in a game for the fourth time in his career.
