Padres 5, Brewers 0: Jeff Suppan, making his first big league start since 2010, combined with three relievers on a six-hitter as San Diego posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time in nearly two years.

Suppan (1-0), starting in place of the injured Cory Luebke, scattered four hits and two walks over five innings, working his way out of bases-loaded jams in both the second and fourth. Ernesto Frieri worked the sixth and Luke Gregerson handled the seventh and the eighth, setting the stage for Dale Thayer to pick up his first save.

The Padres, who gave up just three hits in Tuesday’s 2-0 win, got all of the offense they would need Wednesday in the third inning when Mark Kotsay doubled in a run against Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo (1-3) and scored on a two-run single by Cameron Maybin.

Pinch hitter Jesus Guzman provided some extra cushioning with a two-run double in the eighth inning.

Gallardo yielded seven hits and three walks in six innings for Milwaukee, striking out four.

Suppan, who pitched six scoreless innings in his last major league appearance with St. Louis on Oct. 3, 2010, improved his lifetime record against the Brewers to 13-2. San Diego’s last consecutive shutout wins came July 2-3, 2010.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
The Padres have shut the Brewers out in six of their last nine meetings at Petco Park. ... Thayer’s save was the second of his career and his first since 2009, when he was pitching for Tampa Bay. ... Luebke was placed on the disabled list earlier in the day with an elbow injury.
