Yankees 10, Athletics 9 (14): Ichiro Suzuki scored the winning run on an error in the 14th inning as host New York came back to shock Oakland.

The Yankees looked like they had the win two batters earlier, when Alex Rodriguez sent a single into center with rookie Melky Mesa on second. But Mesa, who was making his major league debut as a pinch runner, missed third base and had to return to the bag, leaving the bases loaded. Robinson Cano grounded to the pitcher before Eduardo Nunez sent a shot to first base off Tyson Ross (2-10) that Brandon Moss failed to handle cleanly, allowing the winning run to cross.

Raul Ibanez homered twice and Suzuki added a solo blast for New York, which maintained its one-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. The Athletics had their lead in the wild card race trimmed to 2 1/2 games over the Los Angeles Angels, who posted a 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

Freddy Garcia was into his fourth inning of work in the 13th when he yielded a leadoff single to Stephen Drew and left a 1-0 pitch up to Jonny Gomes, who crushed it into the left field seats for his 17th home run. Cespedes followed and chased Garcia by blasting his 20th into the second deck in left and Chris Carter made it a 9-5 gap with a solo shot off Justin Thomas.

The Yankees tied it up against a shaky Oakland bullpen in the bottom off the frame. Nelson Figueroa surrendered three straight singles leading off the inning to load the bases before Pat Neshek came on and unleashed a wild pitch. Nunez cut it to 9-7 with a sacrifice fly and Ibanez tied it with a two-run homer halfway up the second deck in right. Corey Wade (1-1) ended up with the win.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (calf) worked out before the game and will head to the team’s spring training facility in Tampa, Fla., on Sunday to continue his rehab. … New York RHPs Rafael Soriano and David Robertson were both unavailable after carrying heavy workloads the last four days. … Neither starter completed three innings. Oakland’s Travis Blackley was charged with four runs (two earned) in two frames while Yankees RHP Ivan Nova was knocked around for three runs on five hits in 2 1/3.
