Oakland starter Dallas Braden (1-1) gave up one unearned run and three hits in five innings before leaving with shoulder stiffness. Braden struck out five.

The Athletics started the fourth inning with four consecutive hits off Verlander (1-2). David DeJesus doubled and scored on Josh Willingham’s double, and Hideki Matsui doubled home Willingham. Kurt Suzuki singled as Matsui advanced to third and scored on left fielder Ryan Raburn’s error.

Oakland increased the lead to 4-1 in the sixth when Kevin Kouzmanoff doubled and scored on Coco Crisp’s two-out double.

Sweeney came home on Kouzmanoff’s sacrifice fly in the eighth after he tripled in Suzuki.

Detroit’s run off Braden came on a throwing error by Oakland first baseman Daric Barton in the second inning. The Tigers added a run in the ninth when Austin Jackson bounced into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded.
