Jason Jaramillo had a three-run double to guide the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-3 victory against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon.
In doing so, the Pirates swept a series from their Ohio River rivals for the first time at home in two years, despite a pair of homers from Reds right fielder Jay Bruce.
Whereas the previous two games of the series were dramatic victories won in the ninth inning, in the series finale the Pirates broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning off former Pirates pitcher Bronson Arroyo (0-1).
With a run across and the bases loaded, third baseman Bobby Crosby was struck with a pitch and Jaramillo cleared the bases with a long fly to left that just missed the glove of Jonny Gomes and went for the bases-clearing double.
Pirates starter Paul Mahon (1-1) didn’t allow a hit for the first three innings and surrendered only two runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Octavio Dotel allowed Bruce’s second home run, but it was the only mark against him as he earned his third save.
