The Chicago Cubs overcame an injury to starting pitcher Tom Gorzelanny to down the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 and win the rubber match of their three-game set on Wednesday.
The Cubs got RBI doubles in the bottom of the third from Kosuke Fukudome and third baseman Tyler Colvin. Michah Hoffpauir and Jeff Baker both delivered RBI singles in the seventh.
Gorzelanny was forced to leave the game in the third after being hit in his pitching hand by a comebacker. He had pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Thomas Diamond (1-3) came on in relief and gave up two runs in 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win and Carlos Marmol booked his 25th save of the year.
Fukudome finished with three hits, while Starlin Castro and Darwin Barney both had two.
Pirates starter James McDonald (2-5) took the loss, allowing three runs over five innings pitched.
Pittsburgh’s Neil Walker continued his hot streak at the dish, smacking his ninth home run - his second in two days - and chipping in three hits. He has hit safely in nine straight games.
