Miguel Cabrera celebrated his 27th birthday with a three-run home run and the Detroit Tigers salvaged the final game of a three-game series with a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
Max Scherzer (1-1), facing Seattle for the first time in his career, threw six innings and allowed six hits and two runs. Jose Valverde earned his third save in four opportunities by working the ninth.
Cabrera, who leads the Tigers in batting at .370, hit Ian Snell’s pitch over the left-field wall in the third inning after Austin Jackson and Johnny Damon singled for the 3-1 advantage.
Casey Kotchman homered in the fifth, pulling the Mariners to 3-2, but Jackson had an RBI single in the eighth for the Tigers.
Snell (0-2), allowed five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings.
