Carlos Pena drove in three runs and B.J. Upton homered as the Tampa Bay Rays broke out of their offensive slump for an 8-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox Saturday.

Evan Longoria, Gabe Kapler and John Jaso each drove in a run for Tampa Bay, which had scored a total of 11 runs in losing four of its previous five contests.

Tampa Bay surprisingly broke out of its offensive doldrums against John Danks (4-4). The 25-year-old left-hander had been 5-1 with a 2.35 ERA in six career starts against the Rays.

Kapler’s RBI groundout in the fourth broke a 2-2 tie. Three batters later, Pena snapped out of a 3-for-27 funk by hitting a two-out, bases-clearing double to center field to give the Rays a 6-2 lead.

Upton hit his sixth homer of the season in the fifth and a throwing error by pitcher Tony Pena led to another run.

Carlos Quentin and Alexei Ramirez homered for Chicago, whose late rally came up short.

Ramirez’s homer in the seventh cut the lead to 8-3. Paul Konerko doubled home a run the next inning and later scored on a wild pitch by Dan Wheeler to make it a three-run deficit.

But Wheeler got Quentin to line out and Joaquin Benoit retired Mark Teahen on a pop out to end the frame.

Rafael Soriano threw a perfect ninth for his 14th save in as many chances. Soriano saved it for Wade Davis (5-4), who allowed three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Danks surrendered a season-high eight runs – seven earned – in a season-low four innings.
