Jeremy Hermida smacked a three-run double in the eighth inning to back another strong performance by Jon Lester as the Boston Red Sox made it two in a row over the Los Angeles Angels with a 5-1 victory Tuesday night.
Hermida's slicing double to the base of the left-field wall off reliever Kevin Jepsen (0-1) cleared the bases and broke a 1-1 deadlock as the Red Sox handed the Angels their fifth consecutive loss.
Lester (2-2) went a season-high eight innings, allowing one run on five hits in outdueling Ervin Santana. The left-hander, who struck out five and walked two, escaped a one-out bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth by getting Bobby Abreu to hit into a double play.
Pinch hitter Mike Lowell added an RBI double in the eighth – his fourth double in two nights – before closer Jonathan Papelbon worked a 1-2-3 ninth.
Santana gave up one run in the first inning and, after wiggling out of a couple of early jams, shut down Boston the rest of the way. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out seven in seven innings.
Marco Scutaro had three hits for the Red Sox and Mike Napoli was 3-for-3 for the Angels.
